Feng Yun Jue

Barely a month after Kung Fu Panda kicked its way to China’s box office success, another martial arts animated feature has taken China by storm. Aptly named ‘Feng Yun Jue’ or ‘Wind Cloud Duel’, the 2D animated movie is an adaptation of the popular Hong Kong martial arts comic series Feng Yun which had also previously been adapted into a live action movie (starring Ekin Cheng and Aaron Kwok).

The story talks about the relationship between two highly skilled martial arts exponents who are fellow disciples but having vastly different characters and outlook on life and their adventures. Of course, the full epic story is a lot more complex than this simple description and the animated movie simply cannot squeeze all that into 90 minutes of animation.

Saying this, whilst Kung Fu Panda remains top of its game with its 200 million RMB takings, Feng Yun Jue has also shown very good results with an impressive earnings of 25 million RMB in its first two weeks of screening. The animated feature is currently the highest grossing local animated feature of all time.

As a animation producer and an avid fan of Hong Kong comics, I’ve always heard many bad things being said about the Hong Kong style of illustration. It’s either the insane bulging physique or the overly detailed illustrations. As far as I am concerned, I am rather happy to hear that Feng Yun Jue has been doing well and personally hope that the animated feature would be able to distribute and broadcast all over the world.

Hong Kong martial arts comics - in my humble opinion - is really in a class of its own and I firmly hope that all nationalities would get to enjoy them.
